Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL)

ESWL is a non-invasive treatment for kidney stones, meaning no incision or internal  device is required for the procedure. It involves the administration of a series of shock waves generated by a machine called lithotripter. The shock waves are focused by x-ray onto the kidney stone and travel through skin and tissue, reaching the stone and break it into small fragments. Those stone fragments are passed out of the body in the urine within few weeks.

Being an completely non-invasive therapy, ESWL treatments can be performed on an outpatient basis. However, there are some pre-procedure preparation that patients need to abide:

1. To reduce risk of bleeding or hematoma foramtion, patients using anticoagulants or antiplatelet medication may need to hold the drugs for few days.
2. Pre-procedure blood test must be completed before ESWL.
3. Nothing by mouth since 12am the night before ESWL.
